In the fashion universe, the first day of fall is considered July 5th. What this means for you? End of summer sales and fall, fall fall! Since fall will be on the brain, what time better than the present to talk about jeans?

These days, jeans are like cars……you can spend $39.99 for the economy model or $199.99 for the high performance model.

With more brands than ever now it’s important to know what you’re getting when choosing the appropriate pair for your budget. Knowledge of wash, fit, and style are just a few components that you should arm yourself with when venturing into the land of denim. Whether you are straight or curvy, the possibilities seem endless with the selection of rinses, cuts, waist styles and brands. Remember these key denim facts when shopping for the perfect pair this fall:

The RISE which can be measured on the front and back of the pant, determines how high the jeans sit on your waist. It begins in the middle of the back on the low waist which finishes around the middle of the posterior vertically, ending at middle of the adjoining seam in between the legs.

The RINSE of the fabric determines the color.

The LEG and LENGTH determine the style of the jean from the knee down to the ankle seam.

-Make sure to wear the appropriate undergarments according to the RISE of your jean to avoid “undergarment leakage”.

-Consider your body shape when choosing the appropriate color RINSE. The DARKER the rinse the SLIMMER the overall look.

-Curvy women look leanest in a wider leg and a full length. Shorter women look taller and leaner when wearing a full length jean that meets the shoe.

Crochet is the new black!

When hitting the stores this season for your fall wardrobe, be aware that knitted and crocheted garments will be the trend to keep your eye on. The ‘handmade’ movement is sweeping the fashion industry without fabric, but with yarn, knitting needles and a crochet hook.

It used to be crocheting was fine for a wall hanging or a rug, but for a bathing suit? How about a wedding gown? These are all the in the latest collection from “Chila 4 Fun”, the Brooklyn based local designer that crochets all of her pieces. No fabric allowed.

I had the liberty of attending Chila’s latest local fashion show at a bar in Bed-Stuy recently. The leggy models strutted down the runway with her latest collection of bathing suits, skirts and dresses.

Each one intricately hand-crocheted, by Chila herself, putting in hours of imagination and craftiness. The detail and effort that goes into the construction of each piece is without a doubt the epitome of creativity and patience. Her bathing suits are each one-of-a-kind and create a sex appeal that we never knew that yarn could create!

Her target customer is a woman 16-35 who is edgy, fun and flirty; someone who loves bright colors and who won’t shy away from making a statement with their wardrobe.

The sky is the limit when it comes to what is possible in the world of Chila. We are so looking forward to what she will crochet down the runway next!

Please visit chila4fun.com to browse her latest collection, attend her next show, or to reach out to her with any questions or comments about the collection.

Meet Paigey Pumphery, sketch artist, pin up illustrator, web and print designer, glass tile jewelry designer and proud Greenpoint resident.

Local designer “Paigey!” is well known in the illustrator world as the wonder woman (literally) who creates comics, commissions and camaraderie. This talented designer brings her art to life, as she dresses the part by wearing crazy outfits, outlandish accessories and costumes. You’ll find Paigey in her favorite costumes and outfits at local events, comic book conventions or whenever the mood strikes. It’s hard to miss Paigey around the Greenpoint and Bushwick as she is known for her free spirited wardrobe and sparkling personality in the neighborhood.

She has developed her artistic talent with inspirations from vintage Looney tunes, old tech savory cartoons and mid century American advertising. She is known best for her bodacious pin up art and emerging craftiness. To expand her vision, she has since started branding items with her animated bombshell pin ups. Paigey has created a various assortment of merchandise, including pin up girl embellished lipstick cases, a line of glass jewelry and bottle cap necklaces. Since the success of creating her ‘off paper’ line, she has gone into production of her next off the wall idea; a line of decoupage coffin shaped boxes that she calls “coffin girls”. The line features her newest character, Lady Blacula along with Varla, her first vampire chic she brought to life in color.

When we asked her about her ‘target’ customer, she simply replied, “Wacky chicks into girl art and pin ups, who appreciate a sprinkle of darkness in a lighthearted sense.” Of course, more than wacky chicks appreciate her art as you will witness yourself at the comic book conventions and events that she participates in each year. If you’re around this weekend, she will be at Artists and Fleas at 70 North 7th Street in Williamsburg this Saturday, April 30th. Stop by to flip through her pages, say hey or to give her a high five in whatever fabulous outfit she will be wearing.

In addition to her own blog, (http://www.theartofpaigey.blogspot.com/), she has been covered and featured in various burlesque type magazines and roller derby blogs. She takes custom orders for both her print work and jewelry. All you have to do is give her a holler at iampaigey@yahoo.com. Her etsy store is coming soon!

Paigey is so fun, flirtatious and fabulous; a true live character who brings her designs to the public on a personal level, where people can really relate to what she is illustrating. “The lines tend to blur between my art and myself”, she said. We would have never guessed while interviewing her in pin up girl costume with her bright yellow wig.

The future for Paigey holds a premium branding of her pin ups, turning her vision into a larger merchandise line of t-shirts, bags and accessories. Stay tuned!
